The Delta State Police Command has renewed its commitment to tackling gender-based violence (GBV) through improved training and victim-centred policing, Commissioner of Police CP Yemi John Oyeniyi said on Thursday.
Speaking at a specialised Command-specific workshop for Divisional Police Officers (DPOs) organised by the CLEEN Foundation, CP Oyeniyi described GBV as a grave human-rights violation and a threat to development. He praised Inspector-General of Police IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu for promoting institutional reforms and capacity building across the Nigeria Police Force, saying the training reflects the IGP’s vision of a modern, people-centred service.
“The approach must be professional, empathetic and lawful,” CP Oyeniyi told participants, urging DPOs to adopt victim-centred practices, strengthen investigations, and use the training to boost public confidence in policing. He also commended the CLEEN Foundation for its ongoing partnership with the police in promoting human rights and accountability.
CP Aina Adesola from the Force Training Department, who attended the event, echoed the need for continuous specialised training to equip officers to respond effectively to emerging challenges such as GBV.
The training covered GBV prevention strategies, survivor-centred policing, investigatory best practices and multi-stakeholder collaboration designed to enhance DPO capacity across Delta State.
The Command in a statement issued and signed by the Police Public Relations Officer SP Bright Edafe, reaffirmed its pledge to protect vulnerable people, support survivors, and ensure perpetrators face justice.
