Nigeria senior police officer and four colleagues on Tuesday, June 30, pleaded not guilty to charges relating to the April 26 extra-judicial killing of 28-year-old Warri musician Oghenemine Ogidi, also known as “OG Million,” at Effurun Main Motor Park in Uvwie Local Government Area, Delta State.
Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Usman Nuhu, popularly called “Ogbegbe,” who is the prime suspect, and fellow officers ASPs Owoloko Daurou Pamo and Okoh Kelechi, together with Inspectors Goodluck Kingsley and Omonigho Ahweyevu, were arraigned before Justice M. Nduka of Delta State High Court 4, Asaba. All five officers have since been dismissed from the Nigeria Police Force.
Nuhu faces one count of murder under Section 319 of the Criminal Code Law, Cap. C21, Vol. 1, Laws of Delta State of Nigeria, 2006. The other four defendants are charged with negligent acts causing harm under Section 344 of the same law.
After the charges were read, the defendants entered not-guilty pleas. Justice Nduka adjourned the trial to July 14, 2026, for commencement.
Delta State Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Ekemejero Ohwovoriole, SAN, who led the prosecution, said the case was straightforward and vowed to pursue it diligently.
“Nobody has the right to make himself the accuser, the judge and the executioner,” he told the court, calling the incident “abhorrent” and assuring the public that justice would be served.
Counsel for two of the defendants, C. Promise, told the court the defence was ready for trial and would return on the adjourned date.
Ogidi was killed after he was apprehended while allegedly attempting to send a parcel containing a Beretta pistol and four rounds of ammunition to a recipient in Sapele. Video footage that circulated online showed him restrained with his hands tied behind his back as he was shot with an AK-47 by ASP Nuhu.
The matter has drawn public outrage and renewed calls for accountability in policing practices as the state prepares to begin the trial next month.
