Senator Ede Dafinone has congratulated 16‑year‑old Oghenegaren Esiovwa‑Thompson for becoming the first Nigerian to win a gold medal in the Men’s Under‑23 Epee at the Commonwealth Fencing Championships held in Lagos.
In a statement issued on behalf of the people of Delta Central and the Urhobo Nation, the senator described the victory as a “remarkable achievement” and a historic moment for Nigerian sport and Delta State. Dafinone praised the teenager’s composure, discipline and determination after an unbeaten run in his pool and a series of decisive wins over international rivals.
Oghenegaren defeated competitors from South Africa and India on his way to the final, including a 15–11 semi‑final victory over India’s Ashwini Shaurya. He capped his performance with a 15–5 win against Asian champion Lokesh Verma to claim the gold.
The senator also highlighted the significance of Oghenegaren’s choice to represent Nigeria after previously competing for England, calling it a powerful expression of patriotism that should inspire other young Nigerians. He commended the athlete’s parents, coaches and support team for nurturing his talent and noted that behind every champion is a network of supporters.
“To Oghenegaren, I say: this is only the beginning,” Dafinone said, pledging his continued support and expressing confidence that the fencer will achieve even greater heights and bring more honour to Delta State and Nigeria.
