The Director-General of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), Mrs. Zubaida Umar, has ordered the immediate deployment of an Emergency Response Team (ERT) following an incident involving a passenger train operating on the Itakpe–Ujevwu rail corridor in Delta State.
The incident occurred on Monday, June 8, along the Agbor axis of Delta State, prompting swift action from the federal emergency management agency.
According to NEMA, the Director-General activated the agency’s emergency response mechanism immediately after receiving an alert on the incident, directing emergency personnel to mobilise to the scene to support response and safety operations.

Mrs. Umar has also established contact with the Managing Director of the Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC), assuring the railway authority of NEMA’s full support in addressing the situation and safeguarding affected passengers.
The agency disclosed that the deployed emergency team is working in coordination with the NRC, security agencies and other relevant stakeholders to provide assistance, ensure passenger safety and facilitate ongoing response efforts.
NEMA said the operation is focused on supporting passengers, strengthening emergency coordination and ensuring that all necessary interventions are promptly delivered.
The rapid deployment underscores NEMA’s commitment to protecting lives and responding swiftly to transportation-related emergencies across the country.
The Itakpe–Ujevwu rail line, a strategic standard-gauge corridor connecting key economic centres, remains one of Nigeria’s major passenger and freight transport routes.
Monitoring and response activities remain ongoing, with further updates expected as assessments continue at the incident location.
