Senator Ede Dafinone, representing Delta Central Senatorial District, has expressed deep sorrow over Monday’s train accident on the Ujevwu–Itakpe line near Agbor, Delta State, calling for an urgent and transparent investigation and stronger safety measures across Nigeria’s rail network.
In a statement issued Tuesday, June 9, the Delta Central lawmaker offered condolences to the families of the victims and prayed for the recovery of the injured. The Nigerian Railway Corporation has confirmed that three people died in the incident and that all passengers have been accounted for.
“This incident is a stark reminder that the safety of Nigerians who rely on public transportation must remain a top priority,” Senator Dafinone said. He praised the swift response of the Delta State Government, emergency responders, medical personnel, security agencies, railway officials and volunteers whose actions helped save lives and provide critical assistance.
Dafinone urged the Federal Ministry of Transportation, the Nigerian Railway Corporation and relevant safety authorities to conduct a thorough review of safety and operational protocols along the Warri–Itakpe corridor and across the national rail network. He called for regular maintenance, strict compliance with safety standards and robust emergency preparedness measures to prevent future tragedies.
The senator also demanded an immediate, transparent investigation to establish the facts, identify any operational or technical failures, and recommend measures to prevent recurrence.
“The affected families deserve answers, and the public deserves reassurance that every lesson from this tragedy will be acted upon,” he said.
In addition to a probe, Dafinone urged that adequate medical care, counselling and support be provided to injured passengers and affected families. He concluded his statement with a prayer for the departed and strength for those affected.
Authorities have not yet released further details about the cause of the accident. Investigations by railway and security agencies are expected to follow.
