The Delta State Police Command has begun fresh measures to tackle the persistent traffic congestion along the Asaba–Onitsha Expressway, particularly around the Niger Bridge corridor, as construction works continue ahead of the yuletide season.
The Commissioner of Police, CP Samuel E. Erale, on Tuesday, October 27, 2026, convened a strategic meeting at the Delta State Police Headquarters in Asaba with security and traffic agencies, as well as contractors handling the ongoing roadworks. The meeting was aimed at reducing delays and improving safety for motorists using the busy expressway.
The meeting brought together the Commandant of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Chinedu Fabian Igbo; the Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Corps Commander Charles E. Edem; a representative of the Delta State Traffic Management Authority (DETSMA); and representatives of the construction contractors.
CP Erale expressed concern over the hardship being experienced by road users, especially around the Niger Bridge axis, and stressed the need for a coordinated response to the gridlock.
The police commissioner directed strategic deployment of traffic personnel, prompt removal of broken-down vehicles, and stronger coordination among the agencies managing traffic along the corridor.
He also urged the contractors to install adequate warning signs, provide clearly marked diversions, and ensure safe passage through construction zones. CP Erale said the contractors must work closely with traffic-management agencies to minimise disruption to vehicular movement during the construction period.
Commitment to Motorists’ Safety
The Police Command reaffirmed its commitment to protecting road users and ensuring improved traffic flow on the expressway throughout the duration of the roadworks.
The intervention comes amid growing concerns over congestion and difficult travel conditions on the Asaba–Onitsha route, a major gateway linking the South-South and South-East. The First Niger Bridge was reopened on October 15 after emergency rehabilitation, while the Federal Government has also ordered a broader redesign and reconstruction of the adjoining Benin–Asaba Expressway.
The Delta State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Bright Edafe, announced the meeting in a press release issued in Asaba on Tuesday.
