The Delta Online Publishers Forum (DOPF) has called on journalists to wield their pens as tools for conflict prevention and peace-building, marking World Press Freedom Day 2026 with a poignant event in Asaba.
Speaking at the forum’s gathering themed “Journalism as a Tool for Conflict Prevention and Peace Building” at the DOPF Secretariat, guest lecturer Dr. Gideon Isikah challenged members to rise above political pressures and ethical lapses.
“Journalists must uphold truth and foster national cohesion.” He noted that the theme was timely especially now that Nigeria is suffering from insecurity, conflicts, and bad governance.
Dr. Isikah, stressed that conflict, if handled well, can yield solutions, but mismanagement can lead to chaos.
“The media has a duty to guide society toward constructive outcomes, and Journalists must respect truth which is the public right.”
He criticized lapses in online journalism, including misinformation, sensationalism, and unverified reports that erode credibility, maintaining that, “Without trustworthiness, the profession becomes distorted narratives.”
He further lamented what he describes as a “begging-bowl journalism” and the habit of fawning over politicians. Instead, he urged reporters to act as watchdogs, adhering to global standards of accuracy, fairness, balance, and diversity while promoting dialogue through talk shows and community forums.
“With journalists acting in good conscience, national rebirth is possible,” he added. “See yourselves as critical stakeholders in nation-building. Nigeria’s progress depends on your integrity and courage.”
Comrade Felix Ofou, Executive Assistant on New Media to the Delta State Governor, praised DOPF’s independence, linking it to financial autonomy. “You cannot succeed without it—that’s why DOPF resonates,” he said, while calling for expanded credibility and regulations.
Other speakers included Fred Oghenesivbe Latimore, DG of Delta State Orientation; Mrs. Tracy, Director of National Orientation; Comrade Churchill Oyowe, Delta State NUJ Chairman; and NAWOJ Chairperson Comrade Sonia Unobunjo.
DOPF Chairman Comrade Emmanuel Enebeli, opened by affirming the forum’s commitment to qualified, professional online journalists whose outlets are registered with the Corporate Affairs Commission, ensuring ethical standards.
