Senator Ede Dafinone has expressed grief over the death of Mr. Adeda Ekwevugbe, a Deputy Director in the Delta State Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education, and called for a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding his death.
Ekwevugbe reportedly died following an incident at his workplace.
In a statement, Dafinone described the development as shocking and troubling, saying a public servant who went to work in service to the state should not lose his life under circumstances that leave his family, colleagues and the public seeking answers.
The senator, who represents Delta Central Senatorial District, extended his condolences to the Ekwevugbe family of Ughelli Kingdom, describing the deceased as a dedicated public servant and an Urhobo son who died in the prime of his career.
Dafinone acknowledged the constitution of an Administrative Panel of Inquiry by the Delta State Government under Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, as well as the ongoing investigation by the Delta State Police Command.
He urged residents of Ughelli Kingdom, the Urhobo nation, civil servants and other concerned Deltans to remain calm and allow the investigations to proceed without interference.
The senator, however, insisted that the investigation must be transparent, impartial and guided by evidence.
“There must be no cover-up, no sacred cows and no attempt to shield anyone found culpable,” Dafinone said, adding that anyone found responsible must face the full weight of the law.
He said justice for Ekwevugbe must not only be done but must also be seen to be done.
Dafinone further pledged to monitor developments and work with the state government, relevant authorities and security agencies to ensure that the truth is established and justice served.
He prayed for the repose of the deceased’s soul and strength for his family, friends, colleagues and the people of Ughelli Kingdom.
