Most Rev. Osório Citora Afonso, the 54-year-old Catholic Bishop of Diocese of Quelimane, was shot and killed at his home in the early hours of Saturday, June 6, 2026, church and local authorities confirmed.
Police said unknown assailants forced entry into the bishop’s residence before firing at him, striking him in the chest. He was pronounced dead at the scene. Authorities have opened an investigation and are searching for the perpetrators, but no arrests had been reported as of Saturday afternoon.
Bishop Afonso was widely respected for his work promoting peace and speaking out against violence. In recent weeks he had publicly denounced a wave of terrorist attacks affecting parts of the region, urging calm and community solidarity.
The Diocese of Quelimane and local clergy expressed shock and grief in statements released after the killing, calling for prayers for the bishop’s family and for justice. International Catholic organizations and human-rights groups are expected to issue responses as more details emerge.
Local officials urged anyone with information to come forward as the inquiry continues. No motive has been confirmed.
May his soul rest in peace.
