Police in Ughelli have arrested one Kelvin Ogaga Emephie, a commercial motorcyclist also known as ‘Okada rider’ in Ughelli after abducting a pupil he was paid to transport to and from school and collecting a ransom of N500,000.
According to SP. Bright Edafe, Delta State Police Public Relations Officer in a video he shared, disclosed that the suspect was employed to pick up and drop the child to and from school, but he allegedly turned on the family, abducted the pupil and demanded a ransom of N2,000,000 but the family was able to raise N500,000. The family had earlier reported the incident to the police in Ughelli, and an intelligence led investigation was launched, and acting on leads, officers located and arrested the suspect and recovered a portion of the ransom money.
The command said the investigation is ongoing and more arrests or recoveries could follow as officers continue to gather evidence accounts from the suspect. The suspect will be charged according to the relevant criminal statutes once investigations are complete.
SP. Bright Edafe, urged parents and guardians to be careful with those the hand their children to and to remain vigilant about persons tasked with transporting children and to also report any suspicious behaviour immediately to the police.
