CP Yemi John Oyeniyi, psc, acipm, mnips, has been inaugurated as the 24th Commissioner of Police for the Delta State Command on Sunday, pledging a renewed push for security amid rising threats like kidnapping, armed robbery, and cult activities.
Speaking at his inaugural press briefing in Asaba, CP Oyeniyi emphasized that protecting lives and property remains the top priority.
“I am fully aware of the responsibility that comes with this office; hence, the safety of lives and property in Delta State is our priority,” he stated, crediting the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu, psc(+), NPM, for his appointment.
The new CP noted that Delta State, which is a key economic hub driving commerce and industry, faces persistent security hurdles. He praised his predecessor, CP Aina Adesola, and the outgoing management team for their foundational work, promising to “build forward, but not backwards” by consolidating gains and addressing new threats.
He assured that his major focus will be implementing IGP Disu’s directive to streamline tactical operations. “All tactical teams within the Delta State Command will be properly coordinated, supervised, and aligned with the overall policing strategy,” Oyeniyi assured, aiming to cut duplication, boost accountability, and ensure intelligence-driven responses for faster crime crackdowns.
He warned against Indiscipline and rights abuses, saying such will face zero tolerance.
“There will be no tolerance for indiscipline, abuse of human rights, and unprofessional conduct of officers, both on and off duty.” He urged officers to uphold the law and treat the public with respect.
On proactive policing, CP Oyeniyi promised the command plans increased community presence, stronger intelligence, and partnerships with the state government, sister agencies, traditional rulers, community leaders, and youths.
“Security is a shared responsibility,” Oyeniyi stressed, calling on residents to “see something, say something” with timely tips.
He also commended the media’s role and rallied officers Discipline, professionalism, and respect for the rule of law are non-negotiable. Oyeniyi pledged the commands commitment to serving Delta’s people and making the state safer for all.
