Stakeholders in Secondary Education in Delta State, on Friday, June 4, 2025, gathered in Asaba to brainstorm on ways to enhancing optimal service delivery in the system.
Speakers at the one day training for teaching and non-teaching staff in the state’s secondary schools which was organized by the Post Primary Education Board, PPEB, all spoke in one voice on the need for teachers to align with modern practices to achieve the set goals.
According to the organizers, the training with the theme “Improving Service Delivery Through Effective Classroom, Office Management for the Enhancement of the MORE Agenda in Secondary Education”, is to improve standards in schools.
Chairman, Delta State House of Assembly Committee on Education, Hon Charles Emetulu, highlighted the importance of training and retraining of teachers, who in turn impact students with knowledge to become better citizens of the society.
Flanked by a member of the committee, Hon Emmanuel Sinebe, the Lawmaker maintained that the place of capacity building for both teaching and non-teaching staff in the system cannot be overemphasized as such help improves quality of services.
He expressed satisfaction that Governor Sheriff Oborevwori led administration is giving priority to training and retraining of teachers in the state, even as he urged participants not to take the opportunity for granted.
“I like the fact that the present administration is giving priority to the training of teachers which must not be taken for granted. I urge those of you who are participating to take this training seriously” Emetulu stated.
Commissioner for Secondary Education, Mrs Rose Ezewu, in her address, said without effective management, both in the classroom and the office, even the best educational policies will fall short of delivering expected outcomes.
Mrs Ezewu who commended the State Governor, Rt Hon Sheriff Oborevwori for approving the training exercise, noted that the program affords an opportunity for self reflection and development so as to adopt best practices in planning, communication, supervision, record keeping, conflict resolution and the use of data in decision making.
For his part, Chairman, Post Primary Education Board, PPEB, Dr Emmanuel Tibi, disclosed the urgency towards improving service delivery in the secondary schools system across the state.
Dr Tidi maintained that the Board was not resting on its oars at achieving optimal performance of teaching and non teaching staffs in secondary schools, saying that standards will further promote the MORE mantra of the state government in the education sector.
The Director, Recruitment and Training, PPEB, Mrs Campaign Preyor, had stressed on the objectives of the programme, which seeks amongst other things to build capacity of the workforce of both teaching and non teaching staff in the Secondary Schools across Delta state.
Mr Preyor paid glowing tributes to all critical stakeholders in the system for their support and commitment to raising standards in the sub sector.
In separate interviews, some participants described the capacity building as a welcome development and commended the board and management of the PPEB for the training
They said it will further improve quality of service in their various schools.
Resource persons including Dr (Mrs) Florence Ofovwe, Prof Patrick Egbule, Dr. (Mrs) Florence Omumu and Sir Coleman Agbegha, took participants through the various topics selected for the training sessions.
The topics discussed include, “Managing Human and Material Resources in Public Secondary Schools and Offices”, “Effective Teaching and Administration”, “Transition from Pen and Paper (PAP) to Computer-Based Test (CBT)” and “Public Service Rules and Extant Circular”.
The training had in attendance members of the Post Primary Education Board, including Chief Oyiborhoro Venture, Mrs Eunice Angozi and Chief Fidelis Okolafor as well as the Functioning Permanent Secretary, PPEB Mrs Aghedo Uka.
