The Delta State Police Command has neutralized two suspected kidnappers in a fierce early-morning gun battle, rescuing two female victims and seizing an AK-47 rifle along with N4.2 million suspected to be ransom money paid by kidnap victims.
SP. Bright Edafe, Police image maker in a statement disclosed that the dramatic operation unfolded around 12:40 a.m on Thursday, when operatives from the Special Anti-Kidnapping and Cyber-Crime Squad, backed by the military, tracked the suspects to their hideout along the Obulu-Uku Power Line. According to him, the raid followed a reported kidnapping in Ibusa and Enu-Ani Mega City, Ogwashi-Uku.
When the suspects discover that police closed in, the kidnappers opened fire, sparking an intense exchange of gunfire, police officers responded with professionalism, neutralizing two syndicate members who later died in hospital while two female kidnap victims were rescued unharmed.
One AK-47 rifle loaded with 19 rounds of ammunition, and four million, two hundred thousand naira (N4,200,000) believed to be ransom proceeds was recovered at the scene.
A search of surrounding bushes continues to hunt for additional weapons and fleeing gang members, police said.
Commissioner of Police CP Yemi Oyeniyi, praised the operatives’ bravery and the military’s support, emphasizing inter-agency teamwork in curbing violent crimes.
The CP however assured residents of the command readiness to protect lives and property and urged the public to share timely tips.
