…Accuse Govt. Of Prioritizing Political Interests Over Citizens Welfare
Nigeria Catholic Diocesan Priests Association (NCDPA), Makurdi Diocese has spoken out strongly against the continuous attacks, killings, and displacement of Christians and entire communities in the region, backing Bishop Wilfred Anagbe’s recent appearance before the US Congress.
The group in a statement signed by its Chairman, Rev. Fr. Terfa Beba, issued in Makurdi, described the situation as a “genocide” and accused successive governments of avoiding acknowledgment of the gravity of the crisis.
“Reality leaves no room for doubt. What our people are experiencing bears every mark of GENOCIDE: a deliberate, calculated, and targeted attempt to eliminate communities and take over their ancestral lands,” the statement read.
The NCDPA highlighted the devastating impact of the attacks on the Catholic Diocese of Makurdi, citing statistics such as the destruction of over 20 churches and mission stations, the killing or kidnapping of priests, and the displacement of thousands of people.
The association expressed disappointment with the conflicting narratives and denial from government officials, accusing them of prioritising political interests over the welfare of citizens.
“We feel wounded, abandoned, and bitterly betrayed by those entrusted with our safety, those whom we trust and hold to high esteem,” the statement said.
The NCDPA reaffirmed its support for Bishop Anagbe, Pope Leo XIV, and the Tor Tiv, His Royal Majesty Professor James Ayatse, who have spoken out against the attacks.
Recall that the Governor of Benue state, Reverend Father Hyacinth Alia, a Catholic priest, had earlier denied that there is no genocide in Benue state. A statement that has been condemned and criticized by many especially as it contradict the testament of the Catholic Bishop of Makurdi Diocese, Most Rev. Wilfred Anagbe, CMF, who appeared before the US Congress house to speak about what he called ‘Genocidal Attack’ on his people.
