The Catholic Media Practitioners Association of Nigeria ( CAMPAN) has celebrated the election of Most Rev. Gerald Mamman Musa, Catholic Bishop of Katstina Diocese, Nigeria, by the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Nigeria (CBCN) as Chairman of its Department of Communication.
Bishop Gerald Musa, was elected during the First Plenary Assembly of 2026, by the bishops held at the Catholic Resource Centre in Abuja.
In a statement jointly signed by CAMPAN National President, Chimdi Oluoha, and the Secretary, Godwin-Maria Utuedoye, noted that Bishop Musa’s election as Bishop Chairman of Communication marks a strategic step in strengthening the Church’s communication structures at both national and diocesan levels as he assumes responsibility for overseeing the communication activities of the Bishops’ Conference, while also coordinating communication efforts across Catholic dioceses throughout Nigeria. With his appointment, Bishop Musa, has also becomes a member of the Administrative Board of the CBCN.
Bishop Musa’s election has been widely regarded as a recognition of his extensive work, research, and commitment in the field of communication. Known for his intellectual engagement with media, pastoral communication, and the role of digital technologies in evangelization, he brings both academic depth and pastoral sensitivity to this new responsibility. His experience is expected to enhance the Church’s engagement with contemporary communication challenges, including digital media, information management, public relations, and the ethical use of communication platforms in a rapidly evolving society.
His position as Chairman of the Communication Department of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Nigeria plays a crucial role in advancing the Church’s mission within a dynamic media environment by providing strategic direction for its communication efforts and ensuring clarity and consistency in its message. The office fosters collaboration among diocesan communication structures, promotes professionalism and shared standards, and serves as a bridge between the Church and the wider public on issues of national importance such as peace, justice, and human dignity. It also encourages the effective use of digital technologies for evangelization and pastoral outreach, guides communication during crises with a commitment to truth and the common good, and supports ongoing training and development for Church communicators. Through these responsibilities, the Chairman significantly shapes how the Church engages society and proclaims its message, with strong expectations that this leadership will further strengthen the Church’s voice and mission in Nigeria and beyond.
