The Catholic Bishop of Warri Diocese, Most Rev. Anthony Ewherido, has called on Christians to remain steadfast in prayer for peace in Nigeria as the country grapples with rising insecurity and economic hardships.
Most Rev. Ewherid gave the charges during a High Mass he officiated at the Sacred Heart Cathedral Parish in Warri, Warri South Local Government Area on Sunday, April 5, 2026.
The bishop marked the Easter by ushering faithful into Easter, the resurrection of Jesus Christ.
The ceremony had the presence of the Cathedral Administrator, Rev. Fr. Philip Ejopharuphen and his predecessor and former Director of Social Communications, Rev. Fr. Benedict Ukutegbe, Ph.D, retinue of priests, religious and host of Catholic faithful.Bishop Ewherido & Catechumen
In a homily, Bishop Ewherido emphasized the transformative power of Christ’s Passion, Death, and Resurrection.
He said; “The death could not hold Christ down, but the Resurrection gives us light.” He added that none of Jesus’ disciples witnessed the Resurrection yet they believed. He urged faithful to trust in God even when they do not see him.
While reiterating the hardship faced by Nigerians, the bishop criticized selfish politicians that are fixated on the 2027 elections at the expense of citizens’ lives and security.
He questioned, “Can elections hold if electorates are all dead?” Pointing to the hike in prices of petroleum products and essential commodities, Most Rev. Ewherido urged Christians to be focus and keep their faith in God. He asked them to always pray for peace, leaders and divine deliverance for the nation.
Highpoint of the celebration was the baptism of 20 catechumens into the Catholic faith.
