Five teachers from Ughelli South Local Government Area, Delta state, narrowly escaped death along the Ughelli-Asaba express way on Sunday, when the bus they were traveling in was involved in a fatal accident while returning from the world teachers day celebration at Asaba, the Delta state capital.
It was learnt that the teachers who were traveling in an 18 seater bus on their way back to Ughelli from Asaba after the celebration, had a collision with a moving truck at Akiewhe in Isoko North local government close to Emevor. It was gathered that the accident was so fatal and all ten occupants sustained various degrees of injuries as some broke their legs, hands and head. As at the time of filing this report, some of the teachers are currently in critical health condition.

A reliable source hinted that the truck driver veered off his lane when the bus was already close attempting to overtake. They said the truck driver turned his steering towards the bus and a major collision occured and bus was crushed by the truck.




“They were about ten teachers in the bus driven also by a teacher. The accident was very fatal that rescuers could not pull out victims from the bus. It was axe they use to smashed the body of the bus before they could pull the victims out.
“Five teachers had very severe injury including the Secretary of the Nigeria Union of Teachers, Ughelli South Local Government chapter, the Vice Chairman and others.
“The teachers were were rushed to the Central Hospital Ughelli,” the source added.
The accident which occurred in the evening of Sunday, sent shock wave among teachers in the local government as family members, colleagues besieged the hospital on Monday morning to sympathies with those involved.
Contacted for comments, the Commissioner for Secondary Education, Rose Ezewu, could not be reached as her lines were busy, but a source told this medium that the Commissioner has visited hospital to get first hand information and to also sympathize with the victims.
