Delta State chairman of the Social Democratic Party SDP, Barr Philip Adu-Odogwu, has revealed that the party is the only credible opposition in the state to save her from a one party state outlook.
The recent defection of Governor Sheriff Oborevwori and his predecessor, Senator Ifeanyi Okowa and State executive from the PDP to APC is a signal that the politicians are changing parties to cover their tracks of corruption.
This was made known in a statement by the chairman following the defection of Delta State Governor Rt Hon Sheriff Oborevwori, Senator Ifeanyi and the PDP structure in the state.
According to Adu-Odogwu,”Just a few days ago, the Delta State Governor, sheriff Oborevwori formally announced his defection to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
“Moving along with him is one of his predecessors Dr.Ifeanyi Okowa who incidentally was the former vice presidential candidate of the People’s Democratic party in the 2023 Presidential election.
“With this mass defection alongside his commissioners, political appointees and chairmen of the 25 local Government Areas of the state, it is obvious that the PDP house in Delta State has finally collapsed.
“The defection of Governor sheriff Oborevwori and his PDP family has only confirmed that the PDP government in the state has all along seen politics as a personal enterprise rather than a wheel of service to the people.
“This defection is not in any way in the interest of deltans as it is selfish, self serving and geared towards holding on to power.
“As a party, we believe that this defection was not driven by the principle of ideological considerations and the former Governor and the incumbent are looking for a kind of security cover for their misdeeds while in office and they believe that by defecting to the APC, they will be shielded from prosecution.
“The defection therefore exposes the lack of political ideology within the People’s Democratic party as it do not share a common ideology but rather a platform for patronage and wealth accumulation for their leaders.
“Despite repeated promises, the PDP and the ruling APC have failed to address Nigeria’s pressing challenges ranging from insecurity, economic hardship and social inequality.
“Nigerians are yearning for a fresh alternative and indeed deltans deserve a government driven by pro- people policies, that which would guarantee their security and provide for their welfare and make the cost of living affordable.
“And as the country approaches the 2027 elections, the SDP is here and remains a credible opposition to the APC in Delta State.
“You will recall that at the creation of Delta State in 1992, Olorogun Felix Ibru of the Social Democratic party became the first Governor and he laid the solid foundation upon which subsequent Governor’s of Delta State have continued to build.
“The SDP is built on justice, fairness and progress and it remains the most democratic and inclusive party in Nigeria.
The SDP remains a solid ground that will rekindle the lost glory of the nation’s democracy.
“With it’s unwavering commitment to social justice, equality and fairness, the SDP is poised to revitalize the country’s Democratic institutions by promoting a culture of inclusivity, transparency and accountability.
“SDP will ensure that power is returned to the people and their voices are heard loud and clear across the length and breath of the country.
“The Social Democratic party is witnessing an unprecedented wave of public support as members from the twenty five local Government Areas of the state and beyond are joining our great party in search of a credible platform that will genuinely represent their aspirations.
“Nigerians need to be reminded that a one party state will worsen the insecurity crisis escalate the economic hardship with it’s attendant job losses and gradually take Nigeria to the precipice.”
